Vega de Mar
Trayamar is a Phoenician necropolis, dating from the seventh century BC, located on the right bank of the Algarrobo River. It is considered one of the most important Phoenician sites in the western Mediterranean.
Its importance lies in the fact that the study of the different strata of some of its hypogeum allows us to see how Phoenician funerary customs evolved, from cremation to burial.
The site was studied by the German Archaeological Institute of Madrid, which found five tombs; along with important pieces of funerary trousseau, among which the so-called Trayamar Medallion stands out, a 25-millimeter gold medallion with Egyptian motifs, in which embossing and graining techniques have been applied.
It is on display, along with the rest of the trousseau jewels, in the Provincial Archaeological Museum of Malaga.
The researchers indicate that this funerary space is directly related to the settlement of Morro de Mezquitilla, which is located across from it on the other side of the river, as is usual in the Phoenician model of occupation of the territory.
