Maro Expedition

Discover a historical gem with medieval walls that tell the story of the city's past, offering a fascinating journey through time and local culture.

After a careful restoration, part of the Castle wall can now be seen, witness to the city of Estepona’s medieval past.

It was the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, who had it built in the early 16th century to replace the old Moorish fortification called Estebbuna, the name from which Estepona finally originated.

Its function was basically defensive and for the safety of its inhabitants, favoring the development of an increasingly large population, facilitating the repopulation of the area and as a result, the subsequent urban expansion beyond its own walls. The successive construction of houses attached to the wall meant that for centuries the fortress remained almost hidden.
