Rio Verde to bogar
Located on the Punta de Calaburras, one of the promontories on the coast of Mijas, its main purpose was to prevent the numerous shipwrecks that occurred there.
The remains of these shipwrecks are abundant on the sea floor. They cover more than 2,000 years of history, which has led these sea beds to be declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.
The Calaburras Point Lighthouse was projected in 1861 and began operation in August 1863. In front of the tower, on its south side, a rectangular building was built to house the lighthouse keeper's dwelling and other lighthouse auxiliary rooms.
In 1916, the first modifications were made to the lighthouse to adapt it to the "new technologies" of the day. This modification did not last long, since a year later a Royal Order was published that gave the Calaburras Lighthouse a range of 28 miles with isolated flashes. This could only be achieved by building a new tower 23 meters high that was not finished until 1928 and is the one we see today.
Between 1999 and 2000, in order to improve the route of National Highway 340, the original annex building was demolished and another one was built behind the tower.
The lighthouse is now fully automated.
