The San Pedro Galleon

The San Pedro Galleon

The remains of a sunken ship offer an attraction for divers, with easy access and rich marine life, ideal for exploring the Mediterranean biodiversity.

A few meters from the shore of Calaceite beach lie the remains of the Delfín steamer whose curious history gave rise to the famous rice boat. Sunk at the end of January 1937, it was one of the last ships sent by the Republicans to supply food to the population of Malaga.

Torpedoed by an Italian submarine, it was able to save its crew but not its cargo consisting of rice, flour, cod and oil, the loss of which gave the cove its name.

Today the wreck has become a sanctuary for marine species that is worth visiting.
The dive is very simple, at a depth of just 6 meters, where you can observe the iron wreck colonized by countless Mediterranean species such as algae, anemones, sponges, spirograph corals, etc.

In its crevices and slabs we can find small species of octopus and conger eels, and among the remains of the boat hermit crabs, starfish, red mullet, cuttlefish, old women, mother-of-pearl clams, damselfish, nudibranchs and some fish torpedo.
