Agrippina and Contemporary

A unique tourist destination offering a journey into the Roman past, with shows in an ancient theatre and an interactive interpretation centre.

The Roman Theater of Malaga is one of the living symbols of Roman Hispania in the city. It has a modern visitor’s center next to it where you can use new technologies to learn about the life and customs of the time. It has also recovered its original use offering live shows inside.

Discovered in 1951, for many years it had been semi-hidden by the building of the Cultural Association built between 1940 and 1942 and renovated in the 1960s, when the first traces of the Theater were discovered. The modern building was finally demolished in order to be able to properly value this Theater within the plans of the cultural programs for 1992.

The excavations revealed the proescenium, i.e. the stage, the remains of the orchestra pit, the place reserved for the senators and the cavea, the stands with a radius of 31 meters by 16 meters high arranged in thirteen tiers, and the entrances to the stands, the so-called vomitorium.

Built in the time of Augustus, in the 1st century AD, it remained in use until the 3rd century. Numerous materials such as ashlars, columns, and carved stones were later used for the construction of the Alcazaba.

The Visitor’s Center, which is decorated on the outside with fragments of the Lex Flavia Malacitana, contains original pieces recovered from the excavations.
